About Coastal Virginia Karate
The "Boot Camp" model is broken.
For decades, American karate was built on a military boot camp foundation... a byproduct of GIs returning from Okinawa without being taught *how* to teach. Presentation replaced function. Repetition replaced understanding.
After fifty years in the arts, I realized that the modern professional doesn't need another authoritarian environment... they need a laboratory. They need a way to audit their movement and restore the structural integrity that a sedentary lifestyle has stripped away.
At the Shorin-ryu Protocol Archive, we have removed the "drill sergeant" methodology. We’ve replaced it with a cooperative training system focused on biomechanical restoration and technical precision.
The foundation of our laboratory is Okinawan Shorin-ryu (Shorinkan). However, we do not treat the system as a museum piece... we treat it as a live diagnostic tool.
We have found that the rigid thinking of many traditional karate associations can stifle growth... often resulting in a regression of the art itself. Our goal is to provide a foundation that fosters active interrogation. Students are encouraged to apply their personal essence to the curriculum... ensuring the art evolves with the individual rather than forcing them to become a carbon copy of the past.

Preserving the Archive in Virginia Beach Since 2021...
Operating from our laboratory facility in the 23454 area, we serve the greater Coastal Virginia community, including Great Neck, Hilltop, and the Oceanfront. Our study sessions are strictly focused on adult biomechanics, providing a local alternative to commercialized, high-volume martial arts schools.
