Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Karate Association

Shōrin-ryū Shōrinkan Karate Association

The Shorin-ryu Shorinkan Karate association was founded in the mid 1970’s by Sensei Shugoro Nakazato.  His goal was to spread the teaching of Shorin-ryu Karate, as he was taught by his Chibana Sensei , throughout the world.

Today you can find Shorin-ryu Shorinkan affiliated dojos in every country around the world.

What is Shorin-ryu Shorinkan?

We are an association of dojos teaching  (小林流小林館 Shōrin-ryū)  also known as in Kobayashi-te, an Okinawan fighting system developed from Shuri-te. Shurin-ryu traces its origins to one of the three Tō-te or Okinawan fighting systems.  There was Naha-te, Shuri-te and  Tomari-Te, each was called based on the city ( Naha, Shuri and Tomari ) Shorin-ryu comes from Shuri-te.

Okinawa is the birth place of Karate, the Okinawan practitioners of To-De would seek out and learn from Chinese martial artist and combine the ideas of Chinese Kenpo.   But this went beyond the basic mixing ideas with their existing system,  like they do to day in MMA.  The Okinawans blended the Chinese fighting ideas in to their training refining the concepts to fit the Okinawan  way of Te.

Our curriculum is based on the teachings of Chibana Sensei and Shugoro Nakazato Sensei teachings. We like to say “That we teach Karate in the manner it was intended”.  Many schools today teach it as a form of dance, allowing students to simply perform the moves.   This is not the way it was intended.  Every move in Kata must be real.

Sensei Noel Smith 8th dan
Sensei Noel Smith 8th Dan

Our dojo has been operated overseen by Sensei Noel Smith who trained, he is now an 8th Dan and is one of the original 7 black belts who returned from Okinawa to the United States.  Sensei Smith trained directory under Sensei Shugoro Nakazato while serving in the U.S. Army and then living in Okinawa after his service.

Sensei Smith learned Shorin-ryu from Sensei Nakazato.

Shōrin-ryū (少林流) is one of the major modern Okinawan martial art systems, and is one of the oldest. Sensei Choshin Chibana learned Shuri-te from Akon Itotsu & renamed it to Shorin-ryu in 1933, he used the characters 少林, pronounced “shōrin” in Japanese and Shaolin in Chinese.

Our lineage is deep and vast spanning more than 4 decades to Shuri-te and much further to it’s orginal base called Okinawan Te.  But, it is to S. Matsumura who taught Shuri-te to A. Itosu  who in turned trained Sensei Chibana, view our lineage  to the Okinawan Masters.   In the United States our lineage begins with Sensei Shugoro Nakazato, sadly he passed in August of 2016.   The lineage from Sensei Nakazato is also very extensive.  But the system was brought to the United States by a small group of 7  black belts, in Shorinkan we call these 7 the first Generation.

Shorin-Ryu and dates back more than 370 years with its origins in Okinawan Tode. This simplified chart below shows the direct linage from “Toko” to Sensie Noel Smith. During the years, Okinwans and Chinese shared their Martial arts with each other, refining it to create what is now called Kobayashi Shorin-Ryu. Becuase of the history and mixing of the Chinese and Okinawan arts, we are an original “ Mixed Martial Art“.
